5 warning signs your commercial fridge or cool room is about to fail

A dying compressor rarely fails without warning. Here's what to listen and look for before it costs you a fridge full of stock.

For a cafe, pub or shop, a failed cool room isn't an inconvenience — it's stock, revenue and food safety on the line, usually at the worst possible time. Most units give some warning before they go. Here's what to watch for.

  • The compressor runs constantly and never seems to cycle off, or runs in short, frequent bursts.
  • Ice building up somewhere it shouldn't — around the door seal, on the evaporator coil, or on the floor inside.
  • The unit is noticeably louder than usual, or you hear a new rattle, hum or clicking sound.
  • Temperature has started drifting or swinging, even though nothing about how you're using it has changed.
  • The door seal is cracked, loose or not sitting flush — the compressor works overtime to compensate.

Why it's worth acting on the first sign

Refrigeration systems tend to degrade, not switch off instantly — but once a compressor actually fails, you're usually looking at an emergency callout, lost stock and a unit down for longer than a scheduled repair would have taken. Catching it early is almost always cheaper and a lot less stressful than catching it during a Saturday dinner service.

What we check

ARCtick-certified technicians handle the refrigerant side properly and legally — this isn't a job for a general handyman. On a service call we check refrigerant levels, door seals, condenser and evaporator coils, drainage, and the compressor's running condition, and tell you straight whether it's a simple fix or time to start planning a replacement.

We run a 24/7 emergency line for exactly this — a cool room doesn't wait for business hours to fail.
