A university degree isn't the only path to a great career — and for a lot of people, it isn't the best one. An electrical apprenticeship means you get paid from day one, come out with no student debt, and hold a nationally recognised licence that's in demand everywhere.
How the apprenticeship works
In Australia an electrical apprenticeship typically runs four years. You're employed by a licensed contractor, you learn on real jobs, and you back it up with study at TAFE. You finish qualified and job-ready — not with a pile of theory and no hours on the tools.

What the work actually looks like
Wiring homes and businesses, solar and batteries, EV charging, data and automation — electricians sit at the centre of how the modern world runs. One week you might be upgrading a switchboard in Echuca; the next you're pulling three-phase into a farm shed or commissioning a rooftop solar array. It's physical, technical and varied.
These trades are for young men and women
The old idea that trades are just for blokes is well and truly out of date. Women are building brilliant careers as electricians, and the industry is actively working to bring more in. If you're capable, keen and willing to learn, there's a place for you. Full stop.
Where it can lead
Getting qualified is the beginning, not the end. Solar and renewables are booming. Automation and controls are a high-value specialisation. Plenty of electricians go on to run their own business — that's exactly how Phillips Electrical started. Others mentor, teach at TAFE, or take the ticket interstate or overseas.
Reliability and a willingness to learn matter more than any prior experience. School leavers and career-changers are both welcome.
