Switchboard upgrades: what affects the cost (and why old boards fail)

Your switchboard is the single point everything in the house runs through — every circuit, every safety switch, every fuse. In a lot of older Echuca-Moama homes, it hasn't been touched since the place was built. That's usually fine, right up until it isn't.

• Rewireable fuses (the old ceramic kind with fuse wire) instead of modern circuit breakers.
• No safety switches (RCDs) — these are what actually protect people from electric shock, not just the wiring from overload.
• Scorch marks, a burning smell, or a board that feels warm to touch.
• Circuits tripping for no obvious reason, or lights that flicker when other appliances kick in.
• You're adding solar, an EV charger, air conditioning or a second cool room and the board's already maxed out.

What actually drives the price

There's no single number for a switchboard upgrade, because no two boards are the same job. The main factors we account for on every quote:

• How many circuits and safety switches the new board needs.
• The condition of the meter, main switch and the wiring feeding the board.
• Access — a board in an open garage is a different job to one buried behind a tight manhole.
• Whether the upgrade needs to be sized for something coming next, like solar or an EV charger.
